Free Energy & the Laws of Physics

Why physicists are confident that a fuel-less, self-running generator cannot work.

“Free energy” is an appealing phrase, but in physics it runs into two of the most thoroughly tested laws we have. Understanding them is the single most useful thing a viewer of this documentary can do. None of it requires mathematics — just clear ideas.

The first law: energy is conserved

The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Add up all the energy going into any closed system and all the energy coming out, and the books must balance. A machine that delivers more usable energy than it receives — the whole promise of “free energy” — would create energy from nothing, which the first law forbids. This is called an over-unity machine, or a perpetual-motion machine of the “first kind,” and none has ever survived independent testing. The idea of conservation of energy is one of the bedrock results of science.

The second law: you cannot even break even

The second law of thermodynamics says that in any real process some energy is always dispersed as low-grade heat, and that overall disorder — entropy — tends to increase. In everyday terms: no machine is perfectly efficient, and you cannot build one that runs forever off its own output, because friction and heat always leak energy away. A device that recycled its own energy with zero loss would be a perpetual-motion machine of the “second kind,” also ruled out. Magnets do not provide a loophole: arranging magnets cleverly does not add energy to a system, and a magnetic motor still obeys the same accounting.

What about “zero-point” and “vacuum” energy?

Fringe-energy claims often reach for real physics vocabulary — zero-point energy, the quantum vacuum, scalar fields — to sound credible. Zero-point energy genuinely exists as the lowest possible energy of a quantum system, but it is not a reservoir you can tap for continuous net power; there is no demonstrated way to extract usable work from it to run a household or a car. Borrowing the words does not borrow the physics.

A very old dream

The wish behind “free energy” is ancient. Inventors have been proposing self-running machines for at least eight hundred years — overbalanced wheels weighted to keep turning, closed loops of water that were supposed to pump themselves uphill, arrangements of magnets meant to drive a rotor forever. Some were honest mistakes; some were outright frauds with hidden springs, compressed air, or a concealed assistant turning a crank. Every one of them, without exception, has failed when examined carefully. This long history matters, because the modern versions — now dressed in the language of quantum physics rather than gears and water — make the same essential promise and run aground on the same laws. Recognising the pattern is part of thinking clearly about any new claimant.

Harvesting energy is real; creating it is not

It is important not to overcorrect into cynicism. We genuinely can capture large amounts of energy that already exists in the world: solar panels convert sunlight, turbines capture wind and falling water, and heat pumps move warmth around with remarkable efficiency. None of these is “free energy” in the fringe sense, because each draws on an external source and each obeys the conservation of energy exactly. The difference is decisive. A solar panel does not claim to make energy from nothing; it claims to convert sunlight, and it can be measured doing so. The SEG, as described, claims the impossible thing: net energy with no source. That is the line between real, world-changing engineering and a perpetual-motion myth.

Why patent offices say no

The impossibility of perpetual motion is so well established that patent offices treat it as a red flag. The United States Patent and Trademark Office, for example, will generally not grant a patent on a perpetual-motion machine unless the applicant supplies a working model that actually does what is claimed — a requirement almost never imposed on ordinary inventions, precisely because these claims so reliably fail. Britain's Intellectual Property Office takes a similar stance. When an idea can only advance by asking you to assume the textbooks are wrong, that is a reason for caution, not excitement.

The takeaway. “Free energy” devices, including the SEG as described in the film, ask us to believe that conservation of energy fails. Given how completely that principle has been confirmed across physics, chemistry, and engineering, the reasonable conclusion is that the claim is mistaken — not that a world-changing exception has been overlooked for decades.
